Wilderness Navigation

Wilderness NavigationBeing able to confidently navigate through wild places is probably the most important piece of preparation for any wilderness journey.

During this course you will learn how to…

  • Understand the map as a two dimensional plan
  • Understand how to use map symbols and scales
  • Take a grid reference for a given position and locate such a reference on the map
  • Use linear features as handrails on navigation exercises
  • Estimate distance on both maps and the ground
  • Use the understanding of contours to match major land forms like hills and valleys to their map representation
  • Plan a safe, suitable journey
  • Use navigation techniques such as ‘aiming off’, collecting features’ and ‘attack points’
  • Employ relocation strategies when lost
  • Improvise direction finding equipment
  • Navigate using natures signs

This course will be run in Snowdonia national park, one of the best areas in the UK for learning navigation. We will have the use of a bunkhouse for the Friday night and Saturday morning (the bunkhouse is next to a lovely pub so don’t forget some cash).  Saturday night will be spent wild camping therefore, a tent or lightweight shelter and a stove to cook on are vital additions (please see the kit list for more information). For this course you must expect to be on foot for most of the day, carrying your equipment over mountainous terrain.Map & Compass
