The popular moccasin workshop, usually twinned with the hide working course is now available as a standalone weekend workshop.
The moccasin was, and still is renowned the world over for quietness, flexibility and just feeling closer to nature. Ellsworth Jaeger in his book Wildwood Wisdom tells us that moccasins are “the best natural footwear that has ever been devised. The moccasined foot can feel its way along the trail and are light and warm at night. Moccasined feet are like the pads of animals”. Jim Riggs author of the Blue Mountain Buckskin manual says quite simply ”buckskin moccasins give you magic feet!"
During this two day workshop you’ll learn a lot about designing lightweight, comfortable and extremely packable foot wear, as well as making an accurate working pattern to work from. You’ll be shown several different stitches and seam types, using needle and thread and also leather thonging to sew your boots. Flexible leather, paint on rubber soling, water proofing wax and leather working tools will all be provided. The design of moccasin you choose is up to you (some are simpler than others) and although various examples of finished moccasin types and their patterns will also be available for you to be inspired by, letting your creative side loose for the weekend is definitely encouraged.
We’ve had knee high boots and long distance bare foot running shoes roll off the production line in the past!
Arrival is 7pm on the Friday evening and finish time around 5pm on the Sunday
PLEASE NOTE: This course is one of our wilderness crafts workshops and is therefore a self catering course. Please bring enough food for the duration as the base camp is quite remote and re-supply is a bit of a mission. However, hot drinks fruit and snacks are provided and available all day. You will have full use of our kitchen and cooking equipment and your food will be stored securely in waterproof containers or a cool box provided by us. Personal camp fires are absolutely fine and fire wood is plentiful and free
