Advanced Weavin' & Craftin'

Basket weavingTake your basketry to the next level whilst incorporating many other traditional skills

This advanced weekend course is a continuation of our increasingly popular Weavin’ and Whittlin’ weekend, concentrating on developing your knowledge of natural materials and how they can be bent, woven and shaped to fulfil our need for containers and carrying devices. Drawing heavily on influences from the world of willow basketry, your main focus of the weekend will be the construction of a traditional round bottomed basket with handle and border. Different weaves will be discussed as will locally found alternatives to willow.  Baskets and traditional containers take many forms depending on the environment they come from so we’ll also cover the use of flexible bark, split wood and coiled grass to make a variety of practical and beautiful products to take home with you.

Due to the advanced nature of this course, participants must have already attended our Weavin’ and Whittlin’ weekend or have a similar level of experience in working with natural materials and competency with sharp tools. The advanced weavin’ and craftin’ containers weekend is run from our woodland base camp in Wiltshire with plenty of quiet corners to set up a tent amongst the Hazel, Ash, Birch and Oak. While our willow is sourced from neighbouring Somerset, many of the materials for your projects will have been harvested from the surrounding woodlands, as will some of the food no doubt. All your meals will be provided, hot brews and biscuits will appear as if by magic and Instructors will always be on hand to offer advice and help when needed.
